For our seasonal series of still lifes, we’re featuring a tool that accompanies us every day in the workshop: the divider.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A pencil-less version of the school compass, the divider is a tool used in many crafts. It is used to maintain and transfer measurements. In leather goods, we use it to ensure the regularity of the distance between the seam and the edge of an object, between our stitches or to position elements such as holes, eyelets and rivets. Spikes can be used to mark the leather where necessary.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

They come in different shapes and sizes, to suit the object being measured: for example, a compass with legs pointing outwards can be used to measure the inside of a piece, while a compass with legs curved inwards can also be used to measure a non-planar surface. The possibilities (and needs) are numerous…<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Variations in the shape of an object as functional as a tool are an important inspiration for us, because in a way, our leather goods are also tools for your daily life. \n \nAll perform the same function perfectly, but their shapes and materials vary. A patina develops depending on the steel alloys used. Some blacksmiths leave the trace of their tools, others take the time to erase it. A world full of poetry opens up to those who take the time to linger. \n<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n
